READING

“Reading is essential for those who seek to rise above the ordinary.”

 

At Haydn, our intent is to provide a curriculum that inspires a genuine love of reading. Leaders prioritise the teaching of the subject and recognise the two main areas: word reading and reading comprehension. We work to achieve this through experience of and engagement with, a range of high quality, carefully chosen and enjoyable texts. We value reading as a key life skill, and are dedicated to enabling our pupils to become lifelong readers; we believe reading is the key to academic success. We want our pupils to understand and use it as a tool to access information and to communicate with the world. We want them to become independent learners, so that they become confident and comprehensive readers; that they learn to read and read to learn.  

We have a consistent, whole school approach.

PHONICS

At Haydn our intent is that all children become successful, fluent readers. We believe that we are able to achieve this by teaching phonics in a systematic sequence combined with a whole language approach that promotes a Reading for Pleasure culture. Our Phonics teaching enables each child to develop their reading skills by developing their competency in decoding letters and sounds. This skill leads to early reading fluency. We endeavour to develop every child’s reading and spelling skills, and to create confident and enthusiastic readers. We want children to understand the importance and joy of reading in school and beyond.
