NEWSLETTER 6TH FEBRUARY 2026 LAUNCHED!

A MESSAGE FROM MS PAULSON

We’ve come to the end of another busy and productive week and we’re almost at the end of half term! It’s good to see the longer daylight hours creeping in as we’ve moved into February. There is much ahead to celebrate!

Next week will start with an assembly about Lunar New Year and will end on Friday with a Dragon Parade performed by our Early Years children. Lunar New Year starts on 17^th February and ends on 27^th February. 2026 is the Year of the Horse. Our learning about this important festival will continue after half term with a whole school celebration day on the Friday 27^th February.

Ramadan, the Muslim month of fasting will also begin on the evening of 17th February and Eid will follow on or around Thursday, 19th March. In our PROUD assembly, a group of Year 6 children are going to share their experiences of their faith at this special time of year.

We will also be taking part in Children’s Mental Health Week. The theme this year is ‘This is My Place’ which is based around belonging and how we can feel a sense of belonging and help others feel like they belong.

KEEPING OUR CHILDREN SAFE AND HEALTHY

During their time at Haydn, we support the children to learn about the different ways that they can help to keep themselves safe, happy and healthy. This is done through assemblies, the PSHE curriculum and through day-to-day classroom conversations. We began this week with an assembly about body boundaries and explored the word ‘consent’ in an age-appropriate way.

We will also be taking part in Safer Internet Day next Tuesday 10^th February with celebrations and learning based around the theme ‘Smart tech, safe choices – Exploring the safe and responsible use of AI’. AI is certainly the hot topic of the moment and with many children and young people hearing about and using AI online, it’s important they have the skills and confidence to make safe choices when they are using smart technology.

Haydn will be taking part in the ‘Big Walk and Wheel Challenge’ which begins on Monday 16^th until Friday 27^th March this year. We know that active, sustainable travel has never been more important. It helps children arrive alert and ready to learn, while creating a safer and more pleasant environment around school.

ROAD SAFETY - KEEPING OUR CHILDREN SAFE AT DROP-OFF AND PICK-UP TIMES

We would like to remind parents that, if you do drive your children to school, not to park on the yellow zig-zag lines on Cameron Street or on the white zig-zag lines on Haydn Road. Apart from this being illegal, it is unsafe and puts our children at risk of being harmed.

Please be aware that any vehicle parked on yellow zig-zag lines outside school during the times shown on the nearby sign will be issued by the local authority with a PCN (Parking Charge Notice). This is the same for the white zig-zag lines by the crossing on Haydn Road which are there to provide pedestrians, children and staff a clear, unobstructed view of the road. These lines are enforced 24-hours a day, every day.

Parking legally and safely is about the safeguarding of our children and this is at the heart of all that we do at Haydn.

A FEW TIPS FROM OUR ‘MUMS FOR LUNGS’ GROUP

‘Mums For Lungs’ is for all parents and carers. They are a national group who campaign for clean air for kids. Haydn’t ‘Mum for Lungs’ group are an active part our school community, supported by Ms Paulson and working local councillors to promote and implement solutions for improving air quality around school.

Air pollution can have a severe impact on children’s ability to learn, their academic progress, as well as their lung function and overall health. Research has shown that lowering air pollution levels in and around schools could significantly improve a child’s working memory. If you would like get involved, please contact the school office. To find out more about Mums for Lungs, please visit https://www.mumsforlungs.org/who-are-we. Here are a few tips regarding air pollution and what you can do to reduce it:

Walk, Cycle, Scoot – Don’t Pollute! – Ditch the car for the short trips to school and the shops. For longer journeys use public transport or a bike.

Walk Away from The Kerb – As a pedestrian, the closer you are to the traffic, the higher the pollution levels are. Keep as far from the road as you can, especially when waiting at crossings and try to walk down quieter streets with less traffic.

No Idling – Turning your car engine off whenever you pull over is a really easy way to stop polluting the air and it saves fuel.

LATIN READING COMPETITION

On Wednesday, eight children from Year 6 attended the EMACT Latin Reading Competition 2026 at Nottingham Girls’ High School. What a privilege it was to take these young people; the children were remarkable in their confident performances against schools from Nottingham, Birmingham and Loughborough. They are a credit to themselves, their parents and carers and our school. We are very proud of you Romy, Ava, JJ, Hattie, Ammarah, Zara K, Georgina and Zara S.

READING, READING, READING

We’ve had a brilliant time celebrating National Storytelling Week in school. Created by Society for Storytelling, this fantastic annual event is a joyful celebration of the power of sharing stories. Stories teach us about the world; they allow us to step into someone else’s shoes and feel empathy; they help us to relax and escape and they can help develop essential literacy skills. We’ve loved swapping classes to share stories and enjoyed hearing stories from the children.
