Children’s Book Project Book Drive
A massive thank you to all the children who donated a book for the Children’s Book Project. We’ve collected over 200! The charity works closely with women’s groups, children’s centres, prisons and schools to gift used books to children, forging links with settings whose communities benefit most from access to free books. In every instance, they work with providers to help plan creative and enjoyable book gifting events. A big thank you to everyone who has donated, it really will make a difference.
World Water Day Saturday 22nd March
World Water Day is an annual United Nations observance day held on Saturday 22nd of March that highlights the importance of fresh water. The day is used to advocate for the sustainable management of freshwater resources.
The theme this year is 'Glacier Preservation.' The aim is to highlight the critical role of glaciers in sustaining life and the water cycle. Glaciers, mountain run-off and snowmelt provide nearly two billion people with water for drinking, agriculture and energy production. There are some beautiful books that you can share with your child to discuss the importance of water.
MUMS FOR LUNGS
Mums For Lungs is for all parents and carers. They are a national group who campaign for clean air for kids. Haydn is taking part in the Sustrans Big walk and Wheel chellenge taking place between Monday 24th March and Friday 4th April to help reduce air pollution around the school.
Air pollution can have a severe impact on children’s ability to learn, their academic progress, as well as their lung function and overall health. Research has shown that lowering air pollution levels in and around schools could significantly improve a child’s working memory. To find out more about Mums for Lungs, please visit https://www.mumsforlungs.org/who-are-we.
Talie, a parent of two children at Haydn, is getting together a group of parents and carers to work with the school to help reduce air pollution and its effects on our children. Please email the school office (admin@haydn. nottingham.sch.uk) if you would like to be part of this group, so we can pass on your details.
Here are a couple of tips regarding air pollution and what you can do to reduce it:
Walk, Cycle, Scoot – Don’t Pollute! – Ditch the car for the short trips to school and the shops. For longer journeys use public transport or a bike.
Walk Away from The Kerb – As a pedestrian, the closer you are to the traffic, the higher the pollution levels are. Keep as far from the road as you can, especially when waiting at crossings and try to walk down quieter streets with less traffic.
