EID CELEBRATION AT SCHOOL

Yesterday we had our whole school celebration of Eid Al Fitr. During the week, we all learned about Ramadan and Eid and made some Eid decorations. Yesterday we had an assembly and heard some of our Muslim children recite verses from the Qur'an. It was amazing to see how much they knew off by heart and we were all very impressed.

Some members of our school family, who are also members of the Muslim community, came into school and decorated the hall for the assembly and the dinner hall for lunch. They also gave us all sweets and made the staff some delicious food. The kitchen prepared a lovely Eid meal too. It was a fantastic day and we would like to say a massive 'Thank you' to the parents who came in to help and provided food and decorations, especially Jusuf for the translation of the children's performances.

MEET FIDO

Yesterday, the School Council were lucky enough to meet Fido and his Street Cleansing Operative, Wes. Fido- short for Faeces Intake Disposal Operation - is an all-terrain cart capable of collecting 240 litres of dog dirt and converting it to slurry. No other place in the country has a machine quite like Fido who was originally named by school children in Nottingham City.

READING, READING, READING

This week we welcomed Councillor David Mellen to school to read a story in our assembly. His visit was part of ‘The Big Reading Challenge 2024’, which launched on the 22nd April. Every year the Leader of the council, Councillor Mellen takes part in the reading week with the aim of raising money for the Nottingham Imagination Library.

Nottingham has supported the Imagination Library for many years. The charity provides free age-appropriate books from birth until five-years-old. This is a key timeframe for promoting child literacy and fostering a love of reading for Nottingham’s children and to date more than 500,000 books have been given to Nottingham children who don’t have any. Donations are key for the scheme to continue, and to give so many children, the gift of books and access to opportunities and skills gained through reading and literacy.

So as a school, we are going to work with the children to think of how we can fundraise for this worthy cause. If you have any ideas they would be most welcome.

LOST PROPERTY AND UNIFORM RECYCLING

Just a reminder that we have a lost property bin outside 4H by the railings and a uniform project recycling bin which is blue. It is important that anything that goes into the blue bin should be clean, dry and in a carrier bag. The bin is emptied on a monthly basis.

The lost property bin is now full to the brim of clothes belonging to children; please take the time to look through. There are tops, coats, jumpers, cardigans, you name it -it’s in there. It would be good if uniforms were named so that we can return them to their owner.

Street Aid Machine in Sherwood - A contactless payment point has been installed in Sherwood as part of a scheme to help people give money in a safe and reliable way to people sleeping rough or facing homelessness in Nottingham.

The Nottingham Street Aid initiative launched in February this year to give people a simple way of donating directly to those in need of support.

The new point has been installed as the number of people sleeping rough has increased by 21 per cent in the city over the last two years, rising from 604 people to 729.

The first contactless payment points were set up in the Victoria Centre and at the Theatre Royal on April 6, while a third was recently installed at McDonald’s in Clumber Street.

A fourth payment point has now been installed in Mansfield Road, Sherwood, next to Nibbles, becoming the first point to become operational outside the city centre. Dr Paul Scotting, who has been coordinating the initiative, says around £600 per month is being raised through the payment points.

He said: “We hope the people at Sherwood will take this opportunity to donate £3 per tap to the fund, every penny of which will be spent on items to help someone who is homeless”.

“We also provide QR codes for those who would like to donate more or would like to become regular donors.”

To donate, people approach the machine, tap their card, and a £3 donation will be made.

It will appear on bank statements as a payment to the Notts Community Foundation, which is one of the partners of the initiative.

The idea for the initiative was inspired by Cambridge Street Aid, Dr Scotting says, and a similar initiative has also been running in Leicester since 2019.

Money donated goes into a fund managed by the Notts Community Foundation, and charities can bid for access to some of the money which must be spent on items for a person who is homeless.
